What is obtained from the treatment of urban solid waste through the pyrolysis plant?

The plant disposes  of MSW 1.6 ton / h, which waste has the following composition:

The pyrolysis plant we are going to design will process 1,6 tons/h of unsorted urban solid waste.

A plant capable of disposing of 38tons a day is suited for a population of 10000 inhabitants who sort hte waste and produce about 1,2 kg of urban solid waste per capita.

Revenues calculations


What is obtained from the urban solid waste processed by means of Pyrolysis, given an input flow rate of 1.6 ton / hour of waste. The plant, through three 350 kW / hour gas engines, will produce 1 MWe / hour at full capacity. For 8,500 hours per year, a production of approximately 8,500 MWatt per year will be obtained, which, sold at a price of € 0.20 per KW, will allow for a gain of:

Calculation of thermal energy
production revenues


The production cycle produces thermal energy. This is recovered for the exsiccation of the incoming product and for cooling the engines with a heat exchanger. Thermal energy is obtained, which can be used for district heating as well as gyms, swimming pools, urban homes, greenhouses for growing vegetables. For each MWe 1.3 MCal / hour is obtained; at 8,500 hours per year, there will be a production of 11,000 Mcal. Sold at a price of € 0.10 per Kcal, the revenues will reach:

The operating costs and costs of the personnel involved in the operation of the plant will be deducted from these revenues.
From the production cycle we recover:

  • Ferrous metals
  • Aluminum
  • Water
  • Inert materials

These can be recycled and resold, for example water can be used in production cycles or possibly to irrigate vegetable production greenhouses, while the inert materials  can be used for road surfaces.
